Sunday June 15, 2014 “Happy Father’s Day!”

1 John 2:13-14 “13 I write to you, fathers, because you have known Him who is from the beginning. I write to you, young men, because you have overcome the wicked one. I write to you, little children, because you have known the Father. 14 I have written to you, fathers, because you have known Him who is from the beginning. I have written to you, young men, because you are strong, and the word of God abides in you, and you have overcome the wicked one.”
Welcome to the Father’s Day edition of “We are the People”.  Tonight, with no surprise, we will focus on being a good dad.  We ask that you spend at least 15 minutes between 6 and 9pm (all time zones) interceding for America’s fathers.  Let us join our hearts today in prayers of agreement concerning our 3 focus needs in America today.
The Bible text above tells us about fathers who know Him who is from the beginning.  That is repeated by the writer so it is very important.  The scripture also tells us that young men are to be champions who overcome the wicked one.  They can do this verse 14 explains because of strength and the word of God in young men.  The writer goes on to say in later verses to keep yourself from things that satisfy the desires of the fleshly man.  The recipients of this letter are then reminded that this world shall pass away but if you do God’s will you will live forever.
Prayer Focus #1:  Pray in agreement that Christian “Fathers” who have an understanding of God’s position as creator (the one who is from the beginning) will take their role as “dads” seriously and mentor young men by telling their stories about how they have found victorious living through Jesus Christ.  Pray that they will also have the courage to share their losses when they took their eyes off of Jesus and looked in the direction of satisfying their life with following the ways of men and not God.
Prayer Focus #2:  Pray tonight that the eyes of young men be upon Jesus Christ and away from those things that blind men from seeing the truth (2 Corinthians 4:4).  There are so many young men who are pursuing and enjoying a world of trinkets while ignoring the treasure of a godly life before them.
Prayer Focus #3:  Pray that the young men desire to know the truth of scripture and place themselves under the mentorship of godly men instead of trying to figure it all out themselves or just listening to peers who have not experienced the many seasons of life and have learned from the generation before them.
A week ago I was out of town with my wife at a church leadership meeting. Walking into a restaurant we encountered a young lady screaming obscenities over her phone and she was weeping uncontrollably.  Many people walked by shaking their heads.  Being a father I chose to get down to where she sat on the ground and offer some of the Heavenly Father’s love with her and some fatherly advice.  She calmed down quickly.  Dads, all it takes is a few words from a father and we can be a part of God’s plan to show people that life is not over – that God will make a difference when we let Him in.
Invite someone you know to join us next Sunday or through the week at  That’s where it all begins “with me”.  As we close tonight let us pray the Lord’s Prayer together.
