Sunday October 11, 2015 “Motives in Prayer”

Zechariah 7:3-6 “Ask the priests who were in the house of the Lord of hosts, and the prophets, saying, “Should I weep in the fifth month and fast as I have done for so many years?”  Then the word of the Lord of hosts came to me, saying, “Say to all the people of the land, and to the priests: ‘When you fasted and mourned in the fifth and seventh months during those seventy years, did you really fast for Me—for Me? When you eat and when you drink, do you not eat and drink for yourselves?”
Welcome to our Sunday night edition of “We are the People” intercession for our nation.  Every Sunday evening we agree on three prayer focus points in prayer.  It is asked that you invest a minimum of 15 minutes in prayers of agreement between the hours of 6 and 9pm (all time zones).
We also have a daily prayer blog and invite you to join us as we pray using the Book of Zechariah as a prayer guide this week.  Invite others to join us tonight at WATP.
Yesterday we prayed that God’s people would gather in prayer in churches (Father’s House of Prayer) as Zechariah 7:2 reveals happened in the prophet’s day.  Tonight our prayers will focus on the reason we are to pray and how to pray in the very complex world we live in today.
Prayer Focus #1:  The men who came to the House of God to pray requested information about prayer.  They approached the priests (those who stand before God on the behalf of man) and the prophets (those who speak on behalf of God to man).  Let us pray that God’s people in America have a heart to know how to pray realizing the power of focused prayers of agreement.  (Read 2 Chronicles Chapter 2 if you are not familiar with the story about Jehosophat.)
Prayer Focus #2: When the prayer group requested of the prophets and priests, “How do we pray – should we weep as in the captivity?”  The Lord answered by questioning their motives for prayer even as we read in Isaiah Chapter 58, “Is this the fast I have called?”
Let our prayers tonight be focused on the reason we pray for America.  Is there any ulterior motive?  Is there a desire to see judgment on the land?  Do we pray hoping that our side will be in power?  God desires for us to have a pure heart in prayer so we might be able to pray in agreement with His will as we “hear from heaven.”  Those are the prayers God answers.
Prayer Focus #3:  In verse 6 the Lord makes His people think about their prayer motivations by looking at their everyday life.  Do we live by, “If the Lord wills” we will do this or that or do we usually do our own thing in our daily routine?  There seems to be a connection according to our text today.
Pray that we will be a people who humbly approach God truly desiring what He wants in our day that will impact America for good.  That will then help us focus the rest of our intercession on His will and ways to bless the U.S.A. as we return to Him.
