Sunday August 14, 2016 “Who To Listen To”

1Kings 12:6-10  Then King Rehoboam consulted the elders who stood before his father Solomon while he still lived, and he said, “How do you advise me to answer these people?”  And they spoke to him, saying, “If you will be a servant to these people today, and serve them, and answer them, and speak good words to them, then they will be your servants forever.”  But he rejected the advice which the elders had given him, and consulted the young men who had grown up with him, who stood before him. And he said to them, “What advice do you give? How should we answer this people who have spoken to me, saying, ‘Lighten the yoke which your father put on us’?”  10 Then the young men who had grown up with him spoke to him, saying, “Thus you should speak to this people who have spoken to you, saying, ‘Your father made our yoke heavy, but you make it lighter on us’—thus you shall say to them: ‘My little finger shall be thicker than my father’s waist!
If you know the story,  Rehoboam chose to follow the advice of the young men which was not the will of God.
Good evening and welcome to We Are The People” prayer for America.  WATP bring hearts together in intercession concerning three prayer focus points.  It is asked that as a partner you invest a minimum of 15 minutes in prayer between the hours of 6 and 9 pm (all time zones.)
Well, the younger men gave advice based on their limited knowledge due not only to their age but also their limited
experience in spiritual things.  The Elders not only had the back ground of God’s Word but also the wisdom of the years.
We all know there is a natural affinity in generations but there is the wisdom of those with grey hairs we are taught in the Proverbs.
Prayer Focus #1  That there be bridges built between the younger and older generations in America today.  As a people we need one another.  Jesus reached out and blessed children. He also conversed at night with an older Nicodemus and called 12 younger men to be His Apostolic team.
Prayer Focus #2  Rehoboam led the nation into a disaster by rejecting the counsel of the elders. It is not that the elders were smart and the younger “friends” were not.  The older understood the effects of rapid and drastic change, while the younger did not have the benefit of years of experience.
Pray that there be respect in America for the voice of experience and that the voice of reason be heard and heeded in an attempt to work our way out of the financial and moral dilemma we  find ourself in.
Prayer Focus #3  Control and taxes were the issues in the days of Rehoboam. Actually a system was built that required people to become a slave to the state through burdensome taxation. The younger advisors said in essence “raise taxes and control the masses”.  The results were devastating.
Pray tonight that the public will recognize that the goal of our representative government and the strength of the nation is a government that lightens burdens on people through fiscal restraint and righteous judgement. “Righteousness will exalt the nation.”
