Matthew 6:22-23 “22 “The lamp of the body is the eye. If therefore your eye is good, your whole body will be full of light. 23 But if your eye is bad, your whole body will be full of darkness. If therefore the light that is in you is darkness, how great is that darkness!”
Welcome to the Sunday evening edition of “We are the People” Prayer for America. Your commitment to intercede on the behalf of our nation is making a difference in the land. One day the invisible battle we are engaged in for the heart of our nation will have visible results as we turn back to God.
Tonight we ask that you pray using the three focus points below as a guide as we continue to follow the words of Jesus in the “Sermon on the Mount”. Thank you for joining us and please encourage others to be a part of this nationwide movement through your “social networks” and other ways in which you connect with friends and family.
The two verses above are connected to the ones that precede and follow them which means they are tied to the subject of finances. Jesus refers to a person having both good and bad eyes. Tonight we will look at both and let God lead our prayers concerning good eyes and bad eyes.
Prayer Focus #1: Proverbs 22:9 teaches us that “a person with a good or generous eye will be blessed because he gives to the poor.” Pray that there be more people in America with good eyes who can see people in need with eyes of compassion and not judgment and share with people who are worthy recipients of the gifts of the blessed.
Prayer Focus #2: Proverbs 28:22 teaches us that “a man with an evil eye rushes after riches, not understanding that poverty will come upon him.” Gambling in every form has become a blight in the land. People hope to “hit the big one” and they become the big one with self-inflicted wounds of financial woes and strained relationships.
Pray this evening that people in America have a “good eye” like a Major League baseball star with a .400 batting average. That hitter is not drawn into swinging at bad pitches, he waits for the good pitch that gets him on base. When people have a “good eye” they will not chase after bad odds in hopes of getting rich quick. They will wait on a good pitch that promises good odds for long-term gains.
Prayer Focus #3: In the parable of the workers hired at different times to work in the vineyard Jesus told those complaining that workers hired near the end of the day were receiving the same pay as those who worked all day. Jesus said in Matthew 20:11-15, “Don’t complain and compare – just be thankful for what you receive. He said ‘is your eye evil because I am good?”
We live in a land where the free market works well when people take advantage of its benefits and work hard to be successful. Pray tonight that people who are satisfied with what they have not be jealous of others prosperity but see that it is good for all when people succeed. Also pray that all of us become thankful that God has given us the opportunity in America to see all ships rise in the harbor when one prospers.
Have a good eye.
